Three-part series from Worldwatch on oil palm industry development; addresses deforestation and sustainability standards
In Malaysia and Indonesia, Worldwatch has published a three-part series on the oil palm industry, including an analysis of deforestation impacts of the oil palm industry , the impact of the growing oil palm industry on local farmers , and a third part on the application of 39 specific criteria and eight guiding principles from the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil.
The article tracks the first shipment of sustainable palm oil shipped by United Plantations, purchased by Unilever, and ultimately distributed via Sainsbury’s, a UK retail; chain, as a part of edible cooking oil. The article examines the potential for 3.4 million acres of new oil palm plantation land by the end of next year in Indonesia.
