Washington state gov’t reaches 2.1 prcent biofuel usage, compared to Governor’s target of 20 percent; investigation underway

In Washington, the state government said that it would reach only 2.1 percent state use of biofuels, despite a 5 percent internal mandate that will rise to 20 percent as of next week.

Gov. Chris Gregoire said meetings were underway with individual department heads to speed up the process of implementation. The 20 percent standard was based on a standard proposed by former Gov. Gary Locke (now Commerce Secretary), and sped up by the Gregoire Administration. The state legislature recently approved a waiver on the climate goals for the Washington State Ferry system, which saved the Ferry system $17 million.
