EBI research team says replacing 10 percent of gasoline with biofuels has material health benefits; examines non-greenhouse gas pollutants
In California, a research team at Energy Biosciences Institute (EBI), in the Life-Cycle Environmental and Economic Decision-Making for Alternative Biofuels program, found that replacing 10 percent or more of the gasoline supply and pollutants would have a material positive impact on human health.
The group has produced a lifecyle impact assessment that looks not only at the greenhouse gas emissions of gasoline, but the release of other pollutants.
The team cautions that additional research will be needed to increase the accuracy of their research, but researcher Thomas McKone said “Just think, if we had done a life cycle impact assessment on the human health effects of gasoline years ago we might not be in the situation we’re facing today.”
