National Biodiesel Board challenges EPA’s NOx allocations, says EPA contravenes Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change findings
The National Biodiesel Board are contending that the EPA has penalized soybeans for nitrous oxide emissions from spreading of nitrogen fertilizer - despite the fact that soybeans do not require major nitrogen inputs and the fertilizer is spread for the benefit of nitrogen-hungry corn cultivation. The Des Moines Register’s Philip Brasher is reporting on the topic.
The NBB says that “There has been some debate in the scientific community in the last decade about the generation of N2O from nitrogen- fixing crops. This was resolved several years ago by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, who said: “Biological nitrogen fixation has been removed as a direct source of N2O because of the lack of evidence of significant emissions arising from the fixation process itself (Rochette and Janzen, 2005).”
