In Illinois, a 114-car Canadian National Railway ethanol train derailed in Rockford according to the Examiner, and at least 14 of the 74 cars loaded with ethanol caught fire and exploded.
A woman parked at a railway crossing was killed while six other locals were burned or injured. The local firefighters were unable to put out the fire owing to the explosive and “very dangerous” conditions, which was allowed to burn itself out. The derailment may have been caused by washout conditions at the crossing.
