Chemrec a finalist for Swedish gov’t support of $250 million black liquor gasification biofuels project
In Sweden, the energy R&D Board of the Swedish Energy Agency has selected a $45 million grant application from Chemrec for a black liquor gasifification plant in Örnsköldsvik, Sweden. Planned production in this full-scale Chemrec plant is about 100000 metric tons second generation renewable automotive fuels BioDME and Biomethanol produced from gasified black liquor from pulp mills. It will reduce fossil carbon dioxide emissions by about 250000 metric tons per year.
The energy feedstock for the fuel is logging residues, bark and industrial wood waste. Total project cost is $250 million and the project would be completed in 2012. Chemrec has since 2005 been operating a black liquor gasification pilot plant in Piteå in northern Sweden.
