Edmonton waste-to-energy project expands with research center; project’s “tipping fee” structure revealed
In Canada, the city of Edmonton and the province of Alberta have expanded the Enerkem Greenfield Alberta Biofuels waste-to-fuels project that will convert municipal wastes into biofuels. The city and province have added a $9 million research facility to the project. The original two sub-projects were a $38 million center that will convert landfill wastes into feedstocks for the Enerkem process, and the Enerkem conversion plant.
With the project, the city’s Clover Bay landfill will be closed and material that cannot be recycled or composted will be assessed a $66 per tonne tipping fee, $45 of which will go towards the Enerkem project. The city expects that a total of 90 percent of urban waste will be diverted away from landfills by the combination of composting, recycling and the Enerkem process.
