In Florida, the city of Tallahassee’s pilot waste oil biofuels program is now processing 200 gallons of biodiesel per day and is using the fuel in more than 500 vehicles and pieces of equipment in the city’s fleet. The city said that no new staff has been hired for the project. The city collects used cooking oil at two recycling centers, solid waste removal sites and public high schools.
Restaurants are the primary users of the program, donating their oil to United Way, which purchases oil from the charity organization at 50 cents per gallon. Participating restaurants receive a tax deduction.
