In the Philippines, “Bamboo taxis” made of 90 percent bamboo and powered by coconut biodiesel have emerged as a replacement for dangerously crowded motorcycles used to carry up to six passengers in town traffic. The taxis were introduced by Tabontabon mayor Rustico Bslderian, and are made by the local populace from indigenous materials. The taxis seat 8-20 passengers and burn one gallon of biodiesel per eight hours of use.
