In Greenland, the Arctic Technology Centre (ARTEK) in Sisimiut has developed a process to convert the oily biomass of sharks caught in Greenland’s fishing nets into biodiesel. A pilot project in Uummannaq will provide up to 13 percent of the energy for the village’s 2450 inhabitants, using a combined heat and power process from sharks and other fish waste oils.
Due to the nuisance factor with sharks in the local area, Uummannaq formerly paid a $38 bounty for every shark heart, and other local fishing villages continue the practice. The pilot process at Uummannaq uses shark meat, macro-algae and household waste, which is then converted to biogas. The World Wildlife Fund is opposing the pilot and the practice.
