New Zealand’s Aquaflow Bionomic, Solray partner to accelerate algal fuel development
In New Zealand, algal fuel pioneers Aquaflow Bionomics and Solray Energy have announced a partnership that will join Aquaflow’s technology for harvesting algae grown in wastewater to Solray’s algae to fuel conversion process. Solray, in turn, is a joint venture between solvent recovery firm Solvent Rescue and heating equipment manufacturer Rayners.
Aquaflow, which also has a partnership with Honeywell UOP to provide algal oil for conversion to drop-in jet fuel, will use its fee-based water remediation approach, which blooms algae in wastewater streams, to provide the feedstock for Solray’s conversion process that produces a crude oil that can be reined into jet, LPG, kerosene or gasoline. At present, Solray converts about one-third of the algal biomass to bio-crude, but is researching improvements to its process.
