Dover Chemical adds PIBSA capacity – intermediate for biofuels additives

In Ohio, Dover Chemical announced that it has added polyisobutylene succinic anhydride (PIBSA) and derivative products in commercial production at its Hammond, IN, facility. PIBSA is a versatile chemical intermediate that adds functionalities—particularly dispersion—to hydrocarbon products used in a wide range of applications, including additives for petroleum-based and biofuels, oil drilling, explosives, coatings, adhesives, and water treatment.

Dover also manufactures the PIB succinimide (PIBSI) derivative in commercial quantities. PIBSI is a dispersant that is a cost-effective alternative to polyethers used in diesel, biodiesel, and engine oils to control engine deposits. Brad Barth, product manager, says Dover Chemical’s current manufacturing capacity for PIBSA is 8 million pounds per year, with plans for expansion.
