In the UK, the Waste & Resources Action Programme and the Environment Agency have developed a reclassification of the dividing line between products and waste. The new classification will free waste cooking oil from waste management regulations which made it more difficult to collect and process for biodiesel. The authors of the new standard said that they hope to remove barriers to the reuse of discarded raw materials, leading to carbon savings under the UK’s Renewable Transport Fuel Obligation which requires 5 percent biofuel content by 2011.
