In Michigan, AHL-TECH announced that it has designed an ethanol-electric hybrid locomotive engine for freight and passenger rail, and is now seeking funding to build, test, and demonstrate its first 1500hp switcher prototype, a forerunner to freight rail models up to 4000hp, and passenger rail designs.
The hybrid design locomotives, combining internal combustion engines and battery technology, are the first to utilize a biofuels optimized engine running on ethanol. The AHL-TECH locomotive electric generator set will use an optimized engine fueled by 95% bioethanol. A 2008 summary of research was funded by the Michigan Corn Growers Association.
