In Belgium, the European Biodiesel Board said that European production of biodiesel, which grew 35.7 per cent last year to 7.7 million metric tons primarily due to rapid increases in France, is not expanding rapidly enough to meet 2020 EU targets. The trade association noted that the EU will require 33 million metric tons of biofuel by 2020 to meet internal biodiesel consumption targets related to climate change mitigation.
The EBB said that US dumping of biodiesel has stunted investment in capacity, noting that as many as half of the region’s 276 biodiesel producers were idle at the present time.
