Chemrec to break ground on BioDME demo plant in Sweden, using black liquor gasification
In Sweden, Chemrec announced that they will break ground in September on a BioDME (dimethyl ether) demonstration plant project in Piteå. The project will be completed in mid-2010, and will demonstrate the production of an advanced diesel fuel, DME, from forest biomass over the black liquor route. The company’s black liquor gasification development plant, also in Piteå, has exceeded 10,000 accumulated operating hours to date, producing high quality syngas from woody biomass feedstock.
DME is generally used today as a liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) substitute, but diesel truck and bus manufacturers have operated DME-fueled prototype vehicles. The Chemrec gasification process will produce green liquor from black liquor and upgrade of the organic part of the black liquor to synthesis gas. Black liquor is a byproduct of the kraft process used at pulp and paper mills. Approximately 7 tons of black liquor is produced in the manufacture of a ton of pulp.
