American Petroleum Institute organizing “astroturf” – fake grassroots rallies — against climate change bill, says Greenpeace

In Washington, Greenpeace released a memo from the American Petroleum Institute in which the API outlined a plan to stage protests against the Obama climate change bill. Greenpeace termed the events “Astroturf”, that is, a fake grassroots effort, while API spokewoman Cathy Landry said “Our goal is to energise people and show them that they are not alone,” in confirming the authenticity of the memo.

Shell, which is a member of API, said it would not be participating in the effort, while ConocoPhillips, which had joined in the US Climate Action Partnership to support the Waxman-Markety climate bill, is promoting the rallies against the bill on its website.
