Today in Biofuels Opinion: “Congress should kill the [ethanol] import fee.”

From the (Riverside, CA) Press-Enterprise:Farm-state influence often trumps common sense when the subject is ethanol. There is no better explanation for the Obama administration’s quashing even a hint that it might seek repeal of tariffs on ethanol imports. But Congress should kill the import fee, which is helping fuel higher food prices worldwide.”

From Recommended Practice 1626 ““Storing and Handling Ethanol and Gasoline-Ethanol Blends at Distribution Terminals and Filling Stations,” 2nd Edition,” 7.3.4.4: “At the time of this document’s creation, there are concerns about the installation and use of blending dispensers for E10 and E85 related to product quality, safety and blending component storage requirements. Consequently, the installation and use of blending dispenser systems at filling stations not recommended for the blending of E10 and E85.”

Note: The American Petroleum Institute (API) is seeking comments on the proposed revision to its publication on storing and handling ethanol and gasoline-ethanol blends. The Recommended Practice 1626, “Storing and Handling Ethanol and Gasoline-Ethanol Blends at Distribution Terminals and Filling Stations,” 2nd Edition, covers the following issues: Material Compatibility; Phase Separation; Ethanol and Ethanol Blend Characteristics; Distribution Terminals; Tank Truck Unloading; and Fire Protection among many other Filling Station and Terminal ethanol storage and handling challenges. This final draft version is available for comment by third parties until August 31, 2009. If you are interested in obtaining this final draft version for comment, please contact API’s Senior Standards Associate, Stephen Crimaudo here.

    1. You gotta love the API. They are so transparent and reliable in their efforts to thwart biofuels. Who could be in doubt where they stand, especially after the accidental leak of that mail laying out the strategy and funding of their bought-and-paid-for “citizen lobby” against climate change legislation.
