FIS to invest $190 million in three South African biodiesel projects
In South Africa, First In Spec (FIS) Biofuels will invest $190 million in three waste vegetanle oil biodiesel plants in Natal and the Cape provinces. One plant will be constructed in Richards Bay, Natal, while the other two will be established in the Western Cape province. Capacity for the Western Cape projects was not disclosed, but the Richards Bay project will have a capacity of 11 Mgy.
South Africa has previously discussed a 2 percent biofuels mandate to be imposed by 2013, but local commitments for biofuels production had stalled over food-vs-fuel concerns and also uncertainty over the scope and timing of a biofuels mandate. Biodiesel from the projcts will be used for the mining, forestry, fisheries and agricultural industries, which qualify for credits if they utilize renewable energy and reduce carbon emissions in their process.
