Angolan ethanol, sugar plantation set to open amidst criticism of neocolonialism

In Angola, AFP is reporting that sugarcane plantation will recommence in Angola this month at a 74,000 acre plantation in Malanje province. The biofuel plantation represents the first major reintroduction of sugarcane n the country in more than 30 years.

The plantation is a project jointly owned by  Angolan state oil company Sonangol, Brazil’s Odebrecht and Angola’s Damer.  The $220 million program will produce 280,000 tonnes of sugar, 8 Mgy of ethanol, and 217 MW of power from burning the leftover sugarcane bagasse. Critics of the project have raised concerns over neocolonialism, land and water usage by the project.
