In Argentina, metrics are appearing on increased exports to Europe following punitive tariffs slapped on US biodiesel.
According to Eurostat and reported by ICTSD, Argentine biodiesel exports have increased by 2000 percent in the past year, to 85,000 metric tons in April 2009 compared to 4,293 metric tons in April 2008.
According to the report, Argentine exporters are benefiting from preferential import fees because Argentine biodiesel is attached to the Generalized List of Preferences. Biopetrol has called on the EU and Germany to close all loopholes for biodiesel and to give the European producers protection against Argentine exports. According to Eurostat, European biodiesel plants are operating at 20 percent of capacity despite the punitive tariffs on US biodiesel.
