Dynamic Fuels: 50 Hottest Companies in Bioenergy candidate profile
Dynamic Fuels
Based in: Louisiana
2008-09 ranking: Unranked
Business: Dynamic Fuels is a 50/50 venture between Syntroleum and Tyson Foods. Dynamic Fuels’ business model is “own and operate” bio-refineries based on Syntroleum’s Bio-Synfining process. The latter is a process for converting low value and waste fatty acid/glyceride streams (from spent vegetable oils used in food processing to palm oil fatty acid distillate) into high quality hydrocarbon fuels (diesel, jet fuel, naphtha, and LPG).
Model: Joint venture owner-operator
Past milestones:
1. In 2008, In Louisiana, the state Bond Commission approved a $100 million bond issue in support of the Dynamic Fuels project, a partnership between Tyson Foods and Syntroleum to produce synthetic diesel fuel from meat fats, corn oil and other substances into “synthetic diesel” fuel. Funding for the project comes from the Gulf Opportunity Zone tax-free, low interest bonds earmarked for economic development in areas affected by the 2005 hurricanes.
2. Dynamic Fuels has spent all of the past year staffing up and building a 75 million gal/yr plant in Geismar, LA (near Baton Rouge). This will be the first “second generation” biofuels plant in the U.S.–converting non-food biofeeds into drop-in hydrocarbon fuels.
2. Plant construction commenced last October at a 23-acre site. Demolition of a previous facility was completed in January.
Future milestones:
1. Commercial production is scheduled to begin during first quarter of 2010.
Metrics: 75 Mgy renewable diesel capacity.
Dynamic Fuels quotable quotes: “The Syntroleum technology converts low-grade fats, oils and greases that cannot be used for animal feed to biofuels.”
“We have two biofuel processs, both producing the same type of isoparaffinic diesel and jet fuel: (1) direct hydroconversion of fatty acid/glycerides, and (2) indirect liquefaction of cellulosic biomass via gasification and Fischer-Tropsch conversion. The first process is being commercialized through our Dynamic Fuels venture with Tyson Foods. A 75 million gal/yr plant is being built in Geismar, LA (near Baton Rouge) to convert waste fats and greases into ultra clean diesel. Startup is expected in first half of 2010.”
