In the Philippines, a Korean research team has signed an MOU with Bohol Governor Erico Aumentado regarding the production of ethanol from red algae. Members of the research team are now testing suitability of Bohol-area waters in a pact with Biolsystems that will establish a 7 acre area for aquacultural testing, and up to 247,000 acres for aquaculture. The land would be leased for up to 50 years. A proposed $100 million ethanol facility will be constructed to distill ethanol.
The process utilizes the red algae species Eucheuma cottonii.
