Frost & Sullivan says European punitive tariffs cost US biodiesel 80 percent of its sales
Industry analysts Frost & Sullivan are reporting that the European market for US biodiesel, which was effectively shuttered in March by punitive tariffs imposed by the European Commission, represented 80 percent of the 677 million gallons of fuel produced in 2008.
According to F&S analysts, the EPA is scheduled under the Renewable Fuel Standard guidelines to set a target for US biodiesel blending of 500 million gallons in 2008 and 650 million gallons in 2010, and said that without the mandate, expected soon from EPA, a continued collapse in the biodiesel market can be expected. According to Digest sources, 85 percent of US biodiesel capacity is currently offline, and according to Hero BX CEO Len Kosar, only two biodiesel producers in the country are operating at capacity.
