In Kansas, R-3 Energy has commenced production at its 1.4 Mgy chicken fat biodiesel plant in Cottonwood Falls, about halfway between Wichita and Kansas City.
According to the project developers, the fuel reduces ozone-destroying chemicals by 50 percent compared to standard diesel, reduces CO by 48 percent, soot particles by 47 percent and reduces sulfur by nearly 100 percent. The plant uses a cold soak filtration method to remove impurities.
The company said that it may add soybeans as a feedstock commencing in 2010.
