Today in Biofuels Opinion: “We are now in a world 100% dependent on scientific innovation.”
J Craig Venter, CEO of Synthetic Genomics: “We are now in a world 100% dependent on scientific innovation. Innovation is the key driver for success, especially in challenging economic times. In my area of genomic science innovation comes from pondering the greatest societal issues and seeking new ways to apply this science to help solve world issues. As an example, my team and I are leveraging synthetic genomic advances to address human health through human genomics and the environmental and energy crisis through development of new, next generation biofuels.”
Lewis L. Smith: “Leonardo Maugeri in Scientific American offers a spectacular example, the Kern River oil field in CA. When it was discovered in 1899, only 10% of the oil found was believed to be extractable. In 1942, after producing 278 million barrels, its reserves [oil remaining and extractable] had increased to 54 million barrels. In 1986, after producing 736 million barrels, its reserves had increased to 970 million barrels remaining. In November 2007, after producing two billion barrels since 1899, this field still had 627 million barrels remaining.”
