Pennsylvania project to convert abandoned mine land to energy crops proposed

In Pennsylvania, two professors at Penn State have developed a project to utilize mining land to grow switchgrass, big bluestem grass and other energy crops. The project will examine the cost effectiveness of utilizing the degraded land around active or abandoned mining area, over a 2-3 year period.

Pennsylvania has 180,000 acres of abandoned mining land, currently in private hands, that could be utilized for energy production, if results from the project are promising.
