In New York, the Biofuels Innovation Hot Spots report found that algae-related biofuel inventions have surged 2,000% since 2003, with total biofuel patents up 550 percent. In the latest period in the study (2003 – Q1 2009) there were 2,466 biofuel patents filed worldwide, with 31% of them filed in China. China shares the top position with Japan in this field. Eight of the top 11 companies patenting in the area of algae-based biofuels are US firms. The report was drawn from the Derwent World Patents Index (DWPISM) database from Thomson Reuters and is available here.
