In Canada, the provincial government in Manitoba has abandoned an effort, for the time present, to harvest wild algae in Lake Winnipeg for algal fuel and to reduce phosphorus levels in the lake. The Manitoba Water Stewardship Board told the Winnipeg Free Press that “With Lake Winnipeg being the 10th largest freshwater lake in the world, the sheer size of the lake makes the prospect of algae harvesting difficult.”
The group said that the algae harvested also has low oil content, and is not financially suitable for algal fuel production.
