F.O. Licht has forecast a global ethanol surplus of around 185 million gallons in 2010, based on projected global consumption of 20.2 billion gallons. Licht managing director Christoph Berg told Reuters that “This surplus is desperately needed in order to maintain the supply chain; we need surpluses in order to keep the stocks-to-use ratio unchanged,” and said that he expects stocks to use rations to tighten in 2010, resulting in a tightening of supply in the overall market.
Overall Licht projected a 4 percent rise in global capacity in 2009 compared to a 33 percent rise in capacity in 2008 and 2007.
