In Finland, Fortum announced that it would join UPM-Kymmene and Metso in a pilot project to produce bio-oil from wood and wood wastes, commencing in 2012. The group said that they were studying a 675,000 gpy pilot project in Tampere that would provide data supporting a commercial scale project at seven UPM paper plants that would add 112 Mgy in bio-oil capacity.
The bio-oil would be primarily used for heat generation as well as providing feedstock for biodiesel production.
