Short documentary film on biochar and carbon capture

In Australia, filmmaker Mark Bluett has completed a 10 min documentary about geo-sequestration and bio-char. Biochar is a by-product of several bioprocessing technologies, including pyrolysis, and creates a carbon-rich soil that improves crop productivity as well as sequestering carbon. More about the documentary and bio-char here and the film can be viewed here.

Today in Biofuels Opinion: “Subsidies and quotas for biofuels are wreaking social and environmental havoc.”

From Christian Aid: “Subsidies and quotas for biofuels are wreaking social and environmental havoc and in many cases actually exacerbating climate change, says a new Christian Aid report. The report ‘Growing pains: the possibilities and problems of biofuels’ calls for  a radical overhaul of governments’ multi-billion dollar support for biofuels, so that only crops which [...]

Biochar improves crop yields by 6-17 percent: test results

In Canada, Dynamotive Energy Systems and BlueLeaf said that a year-long test showed an overall increase of 6% to 17% in crop yields where biochar was applied compared to control plots, and illustrated the potential of biochar not only to store carbon but to improve crop yields, plus soil and water quality. In the test, [...]

Bio-char from pyrolysis the fastest route to draw down CO2 to safe levels, say experts

In Washington, Durwood Zaelke, president of the Institute for Governance & Sustainable Development, speaking at the Climate Change & Security At Copenhagen conference at Washington, outlines two fast-track options for mitigating CO2 impact. The first is to use the international ozone treaty to phase down black carbon soot  and non-CO2 emissions, such as HFCs.
The second [...]

Waste to energy gets boost as Australia embraces biochar and ethanol pioneer ICM enters gasification sector

Waste to energy received a boost from Australia to Kansas with confirmation that the Australian federal opposition made biochar one of its three greenhouse gas control platform technologies, while ethanol construction pioneer ICM moves into gasification in Harvey County, Kansas.
The Sydney Morning Herald reports that the Australian Liberal Party, headed by former Environment Minister Malcolm [...]

Biofuels Digest Special Report on Gasification & Pyrolysis: UN Climate Change Panel and bio-char

Panelists at the UN Climate Change meeting in Poznan advocated biochar, produced from biomass via a fast pyrolysis process that also yields gas and renewable fuel oils.
According to kirhagen, com, “Terra Preta is an Amazonian Indian technology which can vastly improve soil fertility and pull carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere, potentially keeping it out for [...]

Pro-Natura green charcoal, from biomass pyrolysis, reduces CO2; Air France offers green char carbon offsets based on Senegal project

In France, Air France is now giving passengers the option to buy carbon offset credits tied to the Pro-Natura green charcoal project in Senegal. The pyrolysis technology produces 11.6 tons of CO2-equivalent reduction of greenhouse gases per ton of green charcoal produced by Pro-Natura’s pyro-7 technology. The  United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) [...]
