German researchers target winter sugar beet as biofuel feedstock
In Germany, researchers from Christian-Albrecht University in Kiel have commenced a project, titled “Bioenergy 2021: winter sugar beet as energy crop”, to improve breeding of winter sugar beet as a biofuel feedstock.
The Institute of Plant Production and Plant Breeding said that, so far, the winter sugar beet is producing up to 30 percent more biomass, [...]
LS9 passes ASTM specs for its drop-in UltraClean diesel biofuel
In California, LS9 announced that its UltraClean Diesel product exceeds American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) D6751 and Brazilian National Agency of Petroleum ANP-7 specifications. According to third-party testing, LS9 UltraClean Diesel provides an 85% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions when compared to conventional fuel production, contains no carcinogens such as benzene, and trace [...]
Chemrec seeks Georgia sites from black liquor gasification biofuels projects
In Georgia, Chemrec said that it is evaluating mill sites for integrated black liquor gasification biorefineries at pulp and paper mills. Chemrec biorefineries transform mills into producers of biofuels or biochemicals or even green electricity and power. Georgia has more than 24 million acres of forestland – second only to the state of Oregon.
Chemrec’s technology [...]
Today in Biofuels Opinion: “It should be obvious to everyone but a few misguided advocates that ILUC (indirect land use change) is not ready for prime time.”
Marc Gunther, In search of the perfect biofuel : “Not all feedstocks are created equal. I knew that, of course, but the variations in productivity are dramatic. In terms of gallons of fuel that can be produced per acre, according to Aristides Patrinos, the president of a company called Synthetic Genomics, sugar cane and switch [...]
Japan Airlines biofuels flight test a success; camelina, algae, jatropha used in B50 biofuel mix; fuel economy higher than Jet-A
In Japan, Japan Airlines became the fourth airline to successfully flight test biofuels in the past year, and the first to successfully demonstrate camelina as a biofuel feedstock.
The airline conducted a one-hour 747-300 flight test using a B50 blend of camelina, jatropha and algae based biofuel in the number 3 engine.
The jatropha was supplied by [...]
Continental Airlines tests aviation biofuel; first use of algae; first US biofuel test flight; first two-engine flight
