Cereplast to develop bioplastics from algae

In California, Cereplast announced that it is developing a technology to transform algae into bioplastics and intends to launch a new family of algae-based resins. According to the company, algae-based resins could replace 50% or more of the petroleum content used in traditional plastic resins.
Currently, Cereplast is using renewable material such as starches from corn, [...]

Researchers develop methods to convert waste plastics to biodegradable bioplastics; bioplastics to biodiesel

In Ireland, researchers announced that they have developed a new process for developing biodegradable PHA bioplastics from waste plastics using bacteria. The process uses pyrolysis to produce oils, then feds the oils to bacteria who excrete PHA. The process works on polystyrene and water bottle plastic.
Further, a scientific team at Brooklyn Polytechnic has developed a [...]

Bio Base Europe launches as largest development center for biofuels and bioproducts

In Belgium and the Netherlands, Bio Base Europe launched this week, a joint initiative of Biopark Terneuzen and Ghent Bio-Energy Valley that will transform the Gent-Terneuzen Canal Zone into a development center for bio-dyes, bio-plastics, bio-chemicals and bio-detergents. The Bio Base Europe plan calls for a pilot plant for bio-based products and processes, and a [...]

AlgaeVenture Systems touts bioplastics as viable byproduct for algal oils

In Ohio, AlgaeVenture Systems said that algae-based bioplastics are another market of interest for developers of algal oil. The company, which recently launched an algae dewatering system that it claimns reduces the cost of dewatering by more than 90 percent compared to a benchmark cost for centrifuge drying, said that the entire revenue from soy [...]
