Total Gas and Power (TGP), one of the four branches of Total, a major international energy company, is dedicated to the development of renewable energies and sustainable chemicals. TGP pursues differentiation through technology as the first step towards building competitive integrated industrial operations in white biotechnology, solar power, and clean coal.
Initiated in 2009, TGPs Biotechnology R&D Department leverages an original networked innovation model in order to design, develop, and assemble technologies that could make a real difference in the near or mid-term future. The network already includes several collaborations with word-class academic labs and startups; in each case researcher at the partner institution and TGP scientists jointly design and carry out the research efforts. TGP is currently recruiting outstanding junior and senior scientists to join the department and steer this adventure towards success.
One-Of-A-Kind Strategic Partnership between Total and Amyris
Total and Amyris, Inc., a leading US biotechnology startup, announced in June 2010 a strategic partnership which includes an equity stake and a broad spectrum research and development, production, and commercialization agreement which was subsequently expanded in Nov. 2011. Total and Amyris R&D teams will join forces to develop new biosynthetic routes to a variety of renewable fuels and chemicals, using Amyris industrial synthetic biology platform. The level of integration, open-endedness, and ambition of this partnership makes it a first and one of the largest in the clean tech / white biotechnology space.
TGP is seeking a highly talented, driven, and creative Synthetic Biologist (specializing in Directed Evolution) to join the Amyris-Total R&D effort. The collaboration will include both exploratory and demonstration of proof-of-concept type R&D as well as development projects, with the end goal being to develop technologies and products that are ready-to-scale to the appropriate production level.
The successful candidate will be responsible for
Generating and testing hypotheses regarding strain improvement for the production of molecules of interest
Design and engineering of relevant metabolic pathways / constructs / strains, with special focus on improving enzyme performance in strains by constructing libraries and developing high-throughput selection and screens
Independently conceive, initiate and successfully complete critical research projects
Collecting and interpreting data on engineered strains to guide further strain design
Close collaboration with biology operations, analytics, computational and fermentation groups to rapidly interpret data and find creative solutions to problems
Contribute to the companys intellectual property portfolio and scientific publications
Maintain laboratory notebooks, analyze and present data, prepare technical reports, and SOPs covering research
May act as group spokesperson on R&D projects and serve as group representative on interdepartmental projects or programs
May act as a project leader with direct reports and may have full responsibility for completion of key components of large projects
Highly self-motivated and strong desire to succeed
Ph.D. degree with 2-7 years of industrial experience in one or more of the following areas:
Metabolic Engineering, Microbiology, Synthetic Biology and/or Molecular Biology.
Demonstrated experience in directed evolution and associated modern synthetic biology approaches
Experience with yeast molecular genetics is a plus
High level of initiative and independence, energetic, and able to work efficiently and productively in a fast-paced environment
Innovative mindset. Ability and willingness to learn and implement novel techniques, tools and methods
Strong scientific potential and technical expertise, as proven by an excellent publications record or an equivalent set of achievements in industry
Strong analytical and organizational skills; ability to handle multiple projects and competing priorities as proven by a track record of having successfully managed research projects in academia or industry
Ability to function and communicate productively as a member of a highly integrated team; able to bridge between different fields in life sciences and in chemistry
Team player with excellent communication and interpersonal skills
