Sierra Club sues Michigan to block Frontier advanced biofuels project

December 15, 2010 |

In Michigan, the Sierra Club sued the Michigan state Department of Natural Resources and Environment over the proposed Frontier Renewable Resources cellulosic ethanol plant proposed for Kinross. Frontier is a partnership of Mascoma and J.M. Longyear.

In the suit, Sierra Club alleges that the DNRE incorrectly treated the proposed plant as a minor emitter of carbon monoxide, stating that the permit should have been based on tougher standards required under the facility’s  total proposed capacity of 80 million gallons. The initial phase of construction of the plant would install 20 million gallons of capacity, with construction slated to begin next spring with a plant opening scheduled for 2013.
