CAREnergy Inc. is developing a sweet potato ethanol project

In South Carolina, CAREnergy Inc. is developing an ethanol project that will use sweet potatoes as a feedstock. The company was developed by a retired USDA sweet potato researcher and seeks to add value to low income rural areas in the state where growing sweet potatoes is ‘cheap and easy.’ The project is experimenting with traditional edible sweet potatoes as well as a specially designed ‘energy tuber’ or eTuber with 33% dry matter and only 67% water, compared to 80% water in edible tubers.
