In India, IndianOil and LanzaTech have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to collaborate on a demonstration of LanzaTech’s proprietary gas fermentation technology collaboration in a technology demonstration at one of the India Oil refineries. that will enable IndianOil to produce fuel grade ethanol.

B M Bansal, Chairman of IndianOil, said that IndianOil was looking at innovative options in augmenting its energy resources to meet the growing demand of the Indian economy. LanzaTech has recently expanded its portfolio from the production of fuel ethanol from non-food renewable resources to include production of 2,3-Butanediol (2,3-BD), a building block used  in polymers, plastics and hydrocarbon fuels.

LanzaTech CEO Jennifer Holmgren told the Digest, “This is an opportunity for us to continue to integrate into the fuels value chain and also an opportunity to work with IOCL to evaluate the applicability and value of our technology in a refinery setting using refinery gas streams.  IOC and India are committed to low carbon fuels and an alternative energy future.  IOCL has a growing R&D presence and footprint and a commitment to innovation.”
