USDA to deregulate GMO sugarbeet, ethanol corn

In Washington, the USDA has partially deregulated the planting of GMO sugarbeet for this spring, going against a previous federal district court order. The new policy is effective until the agency completes a full Environmental Impact Statement is completed and a final policy decision is made.

The USDA is also expected to soon deregulate a genetically modified version of corn specifically for ethanol production—dubbed ethanol corn—in time for spring planting. GM crops have come under heat recently with the partial deregulation of GM sugarbeet, after it was completely degregulated several years ago, in addition to GM alfalfa.
