Mexico investigating growing pine for biofuels on degraded land

March 1, 2011 |

In Mexico, the Bioenergy Commission of Chiapas State’s legislature is working with mayors and municipalities about growing pine trees on degraded land for biofuels. Studies in the state have shown that there are 900,000 hectares suitable for pine trees—whose seeds have high oil content for biodiesel production—while 280,000 hectares are considered to have the highest potential. The commission is also promoting jatropha trees as a possible biodiesel feedstock on degraded lands.
