Genomatica at #1 in Hot 30 as final week in voting begins

July 13, 2011 |

Genomatica strengthened its grip on first place in the 30 Hottest Companies in Renewable Chemicals & Biomaterials rankings, as voting entered the final, furious week of balloting. Amyris returned to 2nd place after dropping to 4th last week, while Solazyme maintained itself in 3rd place, less than two tenths of 1 percent behind Amyris. Gevo slipped back into 4th place, while LS9 jumped into 5th position.

Rounding out the top ten in voting to date are Dupont, Novozymes, Codexis, Genencor, and ZeaChem.

In voting this week, Cargill, DDCE, Enerkem and Waste Management all fell out of the Top 10, as the weight of voting by the invited international selectors took hold.

New companies in the rankings this week included LanzaTech, KiOR, and Virent.

Selector voting, as expected, focused more on pure-play renewable chemical companies, with Genomatica, Elevance, Myriant, Metabolix, and Cobalt Technologies making the top 30 in selector voting to date.

Big positive movers this week included Codexis, up 9 places to #8, Dupont, up five places to #7, LanzaTech, debuting at #16, Ceres, up 14 places to #14, and Coskata, up 10 places to #15.

“We still have a full week, but it is heading to the home stretch, and last minute voters should make their way to the poll now,” commented Biofuels Digest editor Jim Lane. “But with lots of votes still out there from selectors, Digest community members, and subscribers – its still wide open, as evidenced by the number of companies moving 5 or more positions this week.  and still very much a wide open competition, as shown by the strong surge by companies like IneosBio, ZeaChem, LS9 and Genomatica.”

To companies looking to make a strong move in the last week – make sure you have maximized your visibility within the Digest online Community. Genomatica, which has been working hard on this, with an average rating of 6.4 from Community members (compared to a ballot-wide average of 1.4), has shown that this new bloc of voters may well hold the key to #1, or even staying in the top 10. To give an example, if Myriant, Metabolix or Elevance had been able to match Genomatica ratings from the Community, any of the three would be in #2 position in the overall rankings, instead of in the high teens or 20s.
