Novozymes, DONG debut new biorefining process

July 21, 2011 |

In Denmark, Novozymes has teamed with Dong Energy to create REnescience, a new biorefining process that will turn garbage into a brown, combustible biofuel that can be used for both transportation and power generation. Fredericia in Jutland is expected to become of the first cities to use the process, running its city buses on the fuel as well as powering homes.

REnescience involves spinning and heating household rubbish and wastewater in a cylindrical tank, while enzymes that digest the organic components in the mixture are added. The biofuel is then refined into either ethanol or biogas.
