Coskata lands #1 seed in East Regional, for the 2011 Transformative Technologies Knock-Out

August 5, 2011 |

In Florida, Biofuels Digest announced that Coskata has landed the top seed for the East Region, in its Transformative Technologies 2011 Knock-out Tournament. KiOR landed the #2 seed, following completion of its IPO earlier this summer, while Mascoma and Qteros landed the third and fourth seeds, respectively.

This year’s competition will feature 64 organizations in a weekly elimination format. 52 companies from the Hot 30 and Hot 50 receive automatic berths – the remaining 12 will be chosen from Hot 50 registrations received by 5pm Eastern time August 12, 2011.

“Coskata was the first company to land the #1 ranking in the 50 Hottest Companies in Bioenergy, back in 2008,” commented Digest editor Jim Lane. “So it’s great to see them back on top with the #1 seed in the East Regional of the new tournament. To win, they’ll not only have to knock off Range Fuels in the first round, but they will be up against the winner of Ineos BIO and Dynamic Fuels in the second round, and it just gets tougher from there.

“Given the dispute between INEOS Bio and Coskata over the Coskata technology,” Lane added, “it would be a fascinating second round match-up, to see how subscribers view the two companies, should they both manage to win in the first-round.”

Algenol (#5), Dupont (#6), Joule Unlimited (#7), Ineos BIO (#8), Dynamic Fuels (#9), Dupont Danisco Cellulosic Ethanol (#10), Myriant (#11), Monsanto (#12), Inbicon (#13), PetroAlgae (#14), Butamax (#15), and Range Fuels (#16) make up the field for the East Regional.

Transformative Technologies is the Digest’s premier subscriber-only voting competition, and focuses on technologies (as opposed to, for example, downstream marketers or strategic investors, as well as technology companies, that feature in the Hot 50).

In the first round, Coskata will square off against Range, KiOR against Butamax, Mascoma will contend with PetroAlgae, Qteros goes up against Inbicon, and Algenol will compete with Monsanto. In other matches, Dupont will take on Myriant, while Joule will clash with Dupont Danisco. Ineos BIO and Dynamic Fuels will square off in the final match-up.

The complete field for the West, Central, and International Regionals will be announced next week as more entries are received from at-large applicants.

Subscriber voting will begin August 15, 2011 and will proceed as follows:

August 15-19 First Round – elimination to 32
August 22-26 Second Round – elimination to 16
Aug 29-Sept 2 Third Round – elimination to 8
Sept 5-9 Quarterfinals
Sept 12-16 Semi-finals
Sept 19-23 Finals – winner announced September 25

Registration forms, to fill one of the 12 at-large slots in the tournament, can be downloaded here..

All profile data included in the registration, will be supplied to subscriber voters for the Transformative Technologies tournament, and will also feature in the data book supplied for voting in the 50 Hottest Companies in Bioenergy.
