Laurels: Sapphire is the 10th ranked company in the 2010-11 50 Hottest Companies in Bioenergy poll. Mendel is currently unranked.

The match-up: Two synthetic biology giants duke it out. Sapphire remains at the forefront of the race to produce commercial fuels from microalgae, and it aiming to complete its 1 million gallon demonstration farm by 2014; Mendel is readying to commercialize its enhanced miscanthus energy grass, and is expected to file for an IPO next year if the public equity window remains open.
