South Africa's Green Economy Accord signed, on eve of climate change conference

November 18, 2011 |

In South Africa, some Cabinet Members, representatives of business organizations, community organizers and trade unions signed a Green Economy Accord committing all parties to action, with a mechanism for evaluation and monitoring to make sure that the goals are reached.  The biofuel goals include finalization of blending regulations for 2% ethanol, 5% biodiesel, and an incentive based system to get the biofuels industry going.

Businesses committed to work with coops, community owned land, smallholders to develop feedstock supplies by restarting farming on fallow lands, training and other financial supports.  The accord was worked out and signed ahead of an International Climate Change Conference being hosted by South Africa.
