UAE bans non-biodegradable plastic bags, cites camel crisis

January 5, 2012 |

In the United Arab Emirates, the Government has banned non-biodegradable plastic bags, starting in 2013.  The Ministry of Environment and Water released statistics demonstrating that 12 billion plastic bags are used annually.  The article cites numbers that camel deaths from eating plastic have increased from 33% to 50%.    The article notes that this may have more to do with plastic products not being properly disposed of, as opposed to not being biodegradable.
