Food and Drink iNet sponsors egg shells to plastics R&D

April 16, 2012 |

In the United Kingdom, Food and Drink iNet are funding a research project at the University of Leicester to discover ways to turn egg shells into plastics that could be used to manufacture anything from food packaging to construction materials, as well as products that may prove valuable in the pharmaceutical industry.

Ultimately, the goal is to find a way for companies to avoid the cost of disposal, and instead, create additional revenue streams.  One company, Just Egg, spends approximately £30,000 a year sending about 480 tonnes of shells to landfill for disposal.
