In Illinois, the Illinois Basin-Decatur Project has reached its first capture milestone with its CCS plant sequestering CO2 from an ethanol facility operated by Archer Daniels Midland. Operations at the first large scale carbon-capture plant began a year ago, injecting 1000 metric tons of CO2 a day into the Mount Simon Sandstone saline reservoir, and has since stored 317,000 tons. The project is designed to demonstrate that Mount Simon will not experience any adverse side effects from the injection.
