INOCAS and Leuphana University Lüneburg Publish Global Market Survey on Jatropha

April 11, 2013 |

In Germany, INOCAS launched “Insights into Jatropha Projects Worldwide” based on a global survey of 111 managers of Jatropha cultivation projects in Africa, Asia and Latin America. The survey showed low profits as the main problem of many Jatropha projects, caused by insufficient seed yields. More than half (58 %) of all projects work exclusively or partly together with local small holders and employ them as contracted farmers. This makes significant investments into local agriculture of tropical and subtropical countries possible. “An integration of professional and sustainably maintained agriculture into local structures of small holders may be a recipe for socially balanced and economically successful production of Jatropha “, explains Stefan Schaltegger, scientific coordinator of the study.
