Stricter sustainability requirements hampering EU biodiesel trade

In Germany, trade of RED-compliant biodiesel is getting more difficult as customers add on stricter sustainability criteria than that included in the EU policy, such as compliance with Birdlife International’s biodiversity criteria following the “important bird areas” norms, or UNESCO’s biosphere reserves. German customers are requiring compliance with Nabisy, and those who can’t comply must then supply to the UK, Italy or other parts of Europe. Argus reports that stricter water content is also becoming increasingly challenging in biodiesel trade.
